Why is bitcoin down today?

Numbers, headlines & earlier days →

Bitcoin is lower by $1,280 (1.63%) over the past 24 hours, at $77,101. Tech stocks are moving the same way (Nasdaq −2.86%), so this looks like a broad risk-off day rather than crypto news alone. In the wider market the dollar index is +0.08% and the 10-year Treasury yield down 6 basis points; a firmer dollar and higher yields usually weigh on bitcoin. The next major US release is the Jobs report (October 2026) on Friday, November 6 at 8:30 am ET. In the news, the main themes today are hacks and fraud, and ETF flows.

Bitcoin Price FAQ

What is the price of bitcoin today?

The price at the top of this page is the live price of one bitcoin in US dollars — the midpoint of the best bid and ask on Coinbase (with Kraken and Bitstamp as fallbacks, then the CoinGecko average), updated every 30 seconds. Bitcoin trades 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so the change shown is over the past 24 hours rather than since a daily close.

Why is bitcoin down today?

What is a satoshi (sat)?

A satoshi is the smallest unit of bitcoin: one hundred-millionth of a BTC (0.00000001). Most people buy fractions of a bitcoin, so small amounts are often quoted in sats. The converter on this page turns any amount of BTC or sats into dollars or 24 other currencies, and back.

How many bitcoins are there?

Bitcoin's supply is capped at 21 million coins. About 20.11 million have been issued so far (95.7%), and the rest will be mined gradually until around 2140.

What is the bitcoin halving?

Every 210,000 blocks — roughly every four years — the number of new bitcoins created per block is cut in half. The next halving is due at block 1,050,000, expected around April 2028, when the reward falls from 3.125 to 1.5625 BTC per block. Previous halvings took place in 2012, 2016, 2020 and April 2024.

Why is the bitcoin price different on different exchanges and in different countries?

Each exchange has its own order book, so prices differ slightly between them. In some countries bitcoin also trades at a premium or discount to the international price because of capital controls, banking restrictions or currency demand. Our country pages show the international price converted at today's exchange rate and explain local rules and taxes.

What moves the price of bitcoin?

Demand from investors (including spot bitcoin ETFs and companies holding bitcoin), interest rates and the US dollar, overall risk appetite in stock markets, regulation and news, and the fixed, shrinking supply schedule. Bitcoin often moves with technology stocks in the short term; the "Bitcoin vs markets" panel shows how it is trading against stocks, gold and the dollar today.

How many satoshis are in a dollar?

At today's price, $1 buys about 1,297 satoshis, so one sat is worth $0.00077 (Oct 31, 2026, 05:21 UTC). There are 100 million satoshis in one bitcoin.

How much is $100 in bitcoin?

$100 buys 0.001297 BTC — about 129,699 sats — at today's price of $77,101, before exchange fees and spreads. $1,000 buys 0.01297 BTC.

How much is 1 bitcoin in rupees, naira and dirhams?
